Phonemic Awareness

Phonemic awareness is the understanding of spoken words and the understanding of how the sounds can be separated and rearranged.  Students do not naturally become phonically aware, it must be systematically taught.  Phonemic awareness is a critical component of learning to read.  It is most important that students understand the connection between the approximately 44 phonemes of spoken English and the 26 letters of the alphabet.

Students leaving Kindergarten should be able to:

  • Produce/recognize rhyming words
  • Isolate initial consonants in single-syllable words
  • Identify the onset, rime and begin to fully separate the sounds
  • Blend onset and rimes to form words
